paths and spline mat ID

it is possible to assign(in gui or using maxscript) different mat ID to paths when the viewport mode is set to lines? If I add edit spline modifier, all segments have mat ID 1. I need to separate bark, branches, stems, petioles. I can convert every path with right click to editable spline, set different mat ID, but when I change tree shape I need to repeat this procedure again.

This feature would help me create fully parametric growfx tree(basic shape) with other tree parts using forestPack (groups of needles, leaves, fruits, flowers,..) => tiny memory footprint, fast parsing render times. Thanks :rolleyes:
