3DMK
Hi All, Just doing some testing of Game style 3D Trees & plants......Rendered in Vray.......I will post an example of them in a game engine when I get the software sorted out. All trees & plants are low poly for a game engine. C&C welcome. Cheers Jamie
Eduard
Hi Jamie, It's very impressive. Thanks!
austingrd
Nice work jamie. If I may ask, how long did this kind of work take?
mindflux
Looks really great indeed. Do you think it would be too much to ask for a little write-up on your workflow with GrowFX? I think there are quite a few users interested in stuff like this.
3DMK
Nice work jamie. If I may ask, how long did this kind of work take? Thanks! Building the trees was relatively quick thanks to GrowFX I was testing building low poly trees which I had never done before, so I wasn't keeping on eye on the time. Just lots of testing different techniques, to find what works. Good textures & materials are very important to producing nice looking trees & plants & I often spend more time getting textures & materials right than actually building the form. Once the flora was finished I spent about an hour to create the scene and populate it using Forest Pro.[Most of that time was tweaking different materials, lights, & environment, fog, etc. Rendered with Vray 2.3 Cheers Jamie

Taking much longer than expected due to too much work, but it should be ready soon. Cheers Jamie
mindflux
Thanks, sounds great and I'm really looking forward to it. I was asking because I've never used GrowFX for low-poly modeling, and it seems like (and as is evident from your work) it could not only speed up the process but also yield better results. I can only echo what you said about texturing being time consuming when doing low-poly stuff, I've found out the same. There a some serious limitations on the geometry, yet the models will be most of the time viewed pretty close and from many angles. Which engine are you considering testing in, CryEngine? Had a bit of a test using Cryengine......It's certainly a lot of work to make a low-poly plant/tree for games...growFX makes things easier for sure, but there is still a lot of manual work to be done due to the very strict requirements of real-time games. I think I am going to continue with making high-Quality models instead as that's what GrowFX is best at anyway! Also testing some tree's in lumion.....seems to handle High poly tree's better I'll post some snapshots soon Cheers Jamie
mindflux
Okay, thanks for the report Your findings don't really come as a surprise since the high-poly model is just a starting point for a great looking low-poly model, there's probably no way you can get around that even with GrowFX. Also, the CryEngine asset pipeline is not really as straightforward as it could be so there's quite a lot of manual work involved in getting your stuff into the engine. But it's good to hear that GrowFX can still make life easier. I will try myself as well as soon as I have some time to spare, been simply too busy lately with more pressing stuff. Looking forward to the snapshots, always loving your work.
3DMK
Just finished making some plants for a Lumion user. They are a lot more high poly than things I made for Cry-engine but Lumion can handle them OK. Not getting a very good frame rate due to the extra polys but it's not important to have this as most things are output as rendered movies anyway. C&C welcome Cheers Jamie
