Exporting GrowFX trees in Alembic format

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm trying out a beta of an Alembic plugin for 3ds Max being developed by Exocortex.

As you might know, Alembic, is a new open source format developed by Sony and Lucas Art to allow perfect exporting and caching between software.

I seem to be having problems with GrowFX and I think I know why, when I turn on the option to convert to Mesh/Spline, it's just that Mesh AND Spline.

This unfortunetly causes the Alembic plugin to export the spline instead of the mesh.

Would there be any way to separate the options, so that I can convert only to mesh, to prevent this problem from happening. I've tried adding an edit mesh modifier and such, but didn't have any luck.

This would be a life saver for our current project.

Thanks

Hi,

I know this thread is rather old, but having to deal with the same issue, I wondered if there is a solution yet.

Is it possible to generate a mesh-only for export with alembic (with the current version of growfx)?

Thanks!

This problem seems to be solved, and it's not dependent on converting to Mesh and Spline. Ie if some plugin requests a mesh, the GrowFX provide a mesh, if requests a spline, then provide a spline.

If this problem persists, we'll separate the conversion, it will not take much time.

Cheers

well, i think i could indeed need some help here.

What I'm trying to do is to export a animated (growing) tree from max to softimage using the exocortex alembic plugin.

I'm able to export the animation, but when importing it to Softimage I just get curves (animation is fine though). Am I missing something here? Could this be a problem because of inconsistant vertexcount?

Thanks!

I can't say anything about it, because I don't know the alembic plugin...

But if you want, I can send you a version with separate converting to mesh and spline. Just let me know at support@exlevel.com what is your 3dsMax version, and your operating system (x86 or x64)? I'll send you an update by email.

Thanks!

Hi & thanks for the update!

Export to Softimage works smoothly now. Seems the problem occured because the exporter tried to export Curves and Meshes and once the curves were saved the mesh got discarded. Anyways having the ability to choose between Shape & Mesh generation in GrowFx solved the problem...

Thanks again for the fast support!

Ok, thanks for your test!

Then we'll leave the separate conversion to mesh and spline for the next versions.

Cheers
